In November 1973, a joint study was undertaken by the National Park Service and the Boston Redevelopment Authority to evaluate the overall National Historic Landmark and to identify structures and sites of significance that were outside the area administered by the NPS. The Boston Naval Shipyard in Charlestown, Boston, Massachusetts was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. At the time of this study, a bill was in Congress to transfer property from the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Interior. The study team recommended that the parts of the Boston Naval Shipyard remaining outside the NPS retain the National Historic Landmark status. Therefore, with the NPS administering part of the shipyard as a historic site and the remainder of the shipyard retaining the NHL designation, the entire Boston Naval Shipyard will continue to reflect its national significance as expressed in the original landmark registration. The specific structures and sites are noted, along with several recommendations.
