This report presents the findings of a preliminary investigation of Building 198 at Charlestown Naval Shipyard to assess the building's condition and develop cost estimates for stabilizing the structure, as well as a recommendation for recording its present condition. This would serve as groundwork for the historic structure report. Preliminary investigations indicated that the structure is greatly in need of repair. The alternatives that are presented are 1) demolition, 2) exterior preservation - no occupancy, and 3) exterior and interior preservation with occupancy. The building was built in 1940-41 as a temporary warehouse by the U.S. Navy and the three floors had various historic uses, including mail room, eye clinic, berthing area, materials storage, gymnasium, school, equipment restoration, and barracks. This report includes memoranda exchanged between the Mid-Atlantic/North Atlantic Region and the Historic Preservation Division at Center Service Center.
