This report presents the plans for preservation and management of the Boston Naval Shipyard/U.S.S. Constitution National Historic Site. The Boston Naval Shipyard was proposed as a national historic site to be preserved and managed through a cooperative partnership between the National Park Service and the United States Navy. When the closing of the shipyard was confirmed in 1973, the city's planning department reexamined an earlier proposal from the Boston Redevelopment Authority. This planning document defines this potential historic site relative to its surroundings, including the neighborhood, history, and notable individuals. It includes general management plans for administration, interpretation, maintenance, utilities, and protection. This planning publication was intended to provide information and alternatives for discussion purposes. The study was completed prior to the establishment of the Boston National Historical Park, and the Boston Naval Shipyard then became one element of that larger park.
