ABSTRACT: To demonstrate the properties and potential utility of two different spatial indices, the Gini (G) coefficient and the linear nearest-neighbour (LR) index, that were applied to an empirical trail survey data set. This data set was collected from a parkwide trail impact assessment in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. 72 backcountry trails were assessed and six impact types were discerned: tread incision; wet soil; exposed roots; multiple treads; excessive tread widths; and running water. Application results demonstrate the capability of the two indices in quantifying spatial distribution patterns of impact problems at micro (trail) and macro (park) scales.
