Argues for the need of environmental histories and a historical ecology approach in the National Park Service (NPS) to provide practical inputs to resource managers as well as valuable perspectives on management policies and practices. Using the example of the controversy over renewing the expired lease permitting commercial oyster production at Drakes Estero in Point Reyes National Seashore, the author proposes how environmental history might be applied to the needs and purposes of the NPS (and possibly to other public land management agencies). Emphasizes an approach which begins with the analysis of physical conditions and change over time -- the approach used by historical ecologists -- proceeding from there to a broader analysis of historical context and cultural significance.
