This document contains the sections of the Historic Structure Report for Building No. 198, Boston Naval Shipyard. The data was gathered, synthesized, and organized in order to provide architects with a structural history of the building, interpreters with information on the structure's role in the yard's history and activities, and management with an overview of the building's significance. The research included review of available manuscripts and interviews with former employees of the Boston Naval Shipyard. Building No. 198 is identified with the phase of shipyard development before and during World War II, when the shipyard was expanded and thousands of employees were hired. This particular structure was built in 1940-41 as a temporary storehouse. During the postwar years, the first and second stories of the building were used were various activities, including a mail room, eye clinic, storage, gymnasium, school, and offices. Building No. 198 was planned to be demolished after April 1, 1979 to provide access into the Charlestown Navy Yard through Gate No. 4. The archeological data section indicates the expected original location of structures and features that historically occupied the site. Curtis Lester's 1978 Architectural Survey serves as the architectural data section, although it is noted that the survey was prepared when the building was intended to be preserved and restored rather than demolished.
