In 2018 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (PIRO) submitted a technical assistance request to the NPS Water Resources Division (WRD) titled “Determine Need and Feasibility of Reconnecting Sand Point Wetlands with Lake Superior” (STAR #2580). Construction of Sand Point Road in the 1930’s disrupted the natural hydrologic exchange between the wetlands and the Lake, creating ongoing road maintenance problems and concerns about wetland impacts. During June 19-21, 2018, WRD and PIRO staff established a hydrologic monitoring network in the wetlands on the east side of the road, and on the beach across the road near the culvert outlet. The purpose is to understand the effects of this hydrologic disruption and inform a potential decision to reestablish the natural connectivity between the wetlands and the Lake. WRD and PIRO staff also completed a formal wetland delineation in the area of the road crossing. The delineation would be part of the wetland permit application that would be required if the park decides to proceed with restoring natural wetland and Lake connectivity.
