This protocol describes methods for collecting visitor use data in the Southwest Alaska Network. SWAN’s Monitoring Plan (Bennet et. al. 2006) identified visitor use of parks as an important agent of change in the parks’ ecosystems. With large parks and few well-defined gateways, the Commercial Use Authorization data collected by the park provides a low cost means of counting visitor use in the parks. This census data can be used to look at how visitation to the parks and locations within the parks are changing over time. In addition, they provide parks with enough data to allocate NPS staff to areas of high use.
