The Shoreline Position Trend Report summarizes the results of surveys conducted from Spring 2012 through Spring 2017 at the ocean-facing shoreline of Fire Island National Seashore. Data sets include a spatial depiction of annual changes in shoreline position as well as statistical data describing annual and 5-year changes, all following the model presented in Psuty et al. (2010). Generally, the largest vectors of shoreline change were produced by natural events such as storms (i.e. Hurricane Sandy and subsequent winter storms), and by human-induced cultural events such as beach nourishment or dredging. One of the most mobile portions of shoreline was at Democrat Point. At this site, the shoreline downdrift of the jetty was extending westward and was cut back due to dredging. The other portion of the shoreline with the largest vectors of change was in the Otis Pike Wilderness Area where a breach opened during Hurricane Sandy. The NPS lands and community lands had different metrics of change, with higher rates of erosion within NPS land. This difference was due to beach nourishment episodes within community lands, and the location of the communities on the less erosional western portion of the island. Beach nourishment episodes displaced the shoreline seaward as sand was added to the community beaches. After the initial seaward displacement from beach nourishment, shorelines within the communities began to erode again, thus limiting the lifespan of the nourishment episodes. Communities without recent beach nourishment generally had negative shoreline displacement throughout the survey period. This is the second Trend Report for the Fire Island National Seashore produced for the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network in accordance with the protocol for shoreline position monitoring. The first Trend Report covered from 2007 to 2012. Generally, the trends examined in the 2007 to 2012 and in the 2012 to 2017 reporting periods are similar, with storminess and anthropogenic influences affecting shoreline position.
