Dusting of burrows with deltamethrin has been a very effective tool to reduce fleas and thereby manage plague on prairie dog colonies, and the persistence of dusted colonies in Conata Basin and Badlands National Park is a testament to its effectiveness. However, two primary factors have led to questions about a possible decline in efficacy of dusting on these colonies: (1) fragmentation of the colonies since plague’s arrival at the sites in 2007-08 and (2) a general decline in numbers.
