The newly emergent fungal disease, white-nose syndrome (WNS), has killed over 6 million U.S. bats since 2007. Our project investigates Park-wide bat species and quantifies the naturally occurring microbiota on CAVE bats. Our work has shown that some bat species have bacteria on their skin which inhibits the growth of Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the cause of WNS. This could offer a biocontrol for this devastating wildlife disease.
