On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall off the coast ofsouthern New Jersey. Classified as a Category 2 storm, Sandy was unusualbecause of its low central pressure which manifest in record storm surges upand down the New York and New Jersey coasts (Underwood 2005). Ofparticular interest to this study is Fire Island National Seashore, a barrierisland off the coast of Long Island, New York (Fig. 1).
