This SOP describes how to prepare for the field season for Brown Bear aerial surveys, except where specific tasks are covered by other SOPs. Pre-season field tasks include: 1) obtaining permits; 2) scheduling personnel; 3) coordinating aircraft, base airstrips and fuel caches (SOP 6); 4) preparing equipment (SOPs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6); 5) uploading maps, waypoints, Brown Bear survey protocols, and the most recent version of Park Observer onto the iPads for data collection and navigation (SOPs 2, 3, 4, 6); 6) aviation requirements such as safety and flight following (SOP 6); and 7) pre-season training (SOP 3).
