SEAN sea otter monitoring SOP 19: Detection count data from images (deliverable SO_I) version 1.0

Womble J, Williams PJ, Johnson W, Taylor-Thomas LF, Bower M. 2018. SEAN sea otter monitoring SOP 19: Detection count data from images (deliverable SO_I) version 1.0. NPS SEAN. Juneau, Alaska

After completion of field work for a survey effort and acceptance of the SO_C georeferenced photo deliverable, selected photo pairs are “read” for count of sea otters, times, locations, and covariates using a variation on the processes in SOP 8. Photo pairs are chosen using the accepted SO_D data to identify consecutive photos containing sea otters and the ACDSee application to determine whether the otters are in the overlap zone between pair members. This results in a CSV data file for each aerial survey which, along with others, are zipped into a package. The resulting SO_I is submitted to formal quality control. Once validation is passed and the deliverable is accepted, it is disseminated through repositories. The final product is then used as a basis for calculating the detection probability to inform the population estimation process (see SOP 9).
