This Standard Operating Procedure describes field methods for sampling resident lake fish once every five years from Tier 1 lakes in two Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) parks. Within each Tier 1 lake, sampling locations will be selected on the basis of their logistical feasibility and conformance to the habitat preferences of our focal species. In particular, we will target locations where depth increases rapidly (e.g., lake shelf edges) and/or where salmon smolts are relatively concentrated (e.g., stream mouths). This spatial sampling design assumes that the focal species’ population in each Tier 1 lake is panmictic, until proven otherwise.
