Purpose - The archeological investigation at the Maurice Stephens House was done at the request of the National Park Service in anticipation of extensive subsurface disturbances around the historic house resulting from needed maintenance. The proposed maintenance project will consist of trenching around a portion of the house foundation in order to waterproof the structure, as well as trenching from Route 23 to the building for the installation of new utility lines. The Maurice Stephens House is included within the Valley Forge National Historic Landmark, and the proposed maintenance project necessitates archeological mitigation of the anticipated impacts.
