Silver flies (Leucopis spp.) for biological control of hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Mayfield A. 2018. Silver flies (Leucopis spp.) for biological control of hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. National Park Service. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Summary of proposed field methods and activities: In the GSMNP, we will use the methods tested in 2015 and 2016 to release adult flies, i.e. release onto enclosed branches with HWA infestations, but rather than collect bagged branches to assess immediate survival and reproduction of flies, we will remove the mesh bags and allow the flies to disperse from release sites. In the eastern U.S., we will include multiple sites along a north - south gradient of infested eastern hemlocks (one of which is proposed for the GSMNP). We will also include HWA infested eastern hemlock trees with known populations of La. nigrinus. An MS student at the University of Vermont will participate in the releases and follow the survival and spread of the flies for the first two years after release.
