The Dorchester Heights Monument in Thomas Park commemorates the evacuation of Boston by the British on March 17, 1776, Washington's first victory in the Revolutionary War. It was designed by the Boston architectural firm of Robert Swain Peabody and John Goddard Stearns, who won the commission in a competition held by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. For this reason, the Boston Art Commission, which had to approve all new works of art acquired by the city, was involved in the management of the competition and in later modifications and rehabilitation of the structure until the mid-1950s when the National Park Service assumed these responsibilities. The Monument, which was dedicated on March 17, 1902, is a notable example of the Colonial Revival style. This Historic Structure Report, which was initiated in 1992, includes historical analysis, architectural and structural analysis, mechanical/electrical analysis, and treatment recommendations. It was recommended that, upon approval of this HSR, it be left in an "Approved Draft" form to allow for the addition of additional data related to the Monument's construction that might be uncovered.
