Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network topographical change (3D) monitoring: 2016-2017 report for Great Kills, Staten Island Unit, Gateway National Recreation Area

Topographic surveys were conducted seasonally from spring 2016 to spring 2017 to monitor topographical change within an Area of Special Interest (ASI) at Great Kills, a park within the Staten Island Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Several features, including the 0 m NAVD88 shoreline position, foredune crest line, bluff edge line, elevation, and volumetric feature change of Great Kills were derived from the survey data and are included in this report. Within the Area of Special Interest (ASI) at Great Kills, the shoreline feature over the survey period displayed small net erosion in the Northern Portion of the ASI and transitioned to a slightly seaward position (accretion) in the Southern Portion of the ASI. In all temporal comparisons, the mean shoreline displacement of the entire site was landward. In the Southern Portion of the ASI, the foredune crest line position varied with sections of both slight seaward and slight landward displacement. The net survey comparison yielded a mean landward displacement of the foredune crest line. The bluff edge line had slight erosion, with displacement landward in the Northern Portion of the ASI in all comparisons. Over the course of the survey period, there was a large amount of volumetric change at Great Kills. Most of this change occurred as volumetric loss of the beach feature in the Northern Portion of the ASI. Also in the north, there was some sediment loss from the upland feature. In the Southern Portion of the ASI, there was generally net accretion, although some areas had volumetric loss. There was variation in response of the topographical features from north to south, associated with direction of longshore transport, as Great Kills transitioned from an eroding bluff region into dune-beach topography. Whereas the magnitude of change varied greatly among different features, there was generally net erosion or landward displacement occurring in the Northern Portion. The net negative change in the Northern Portion generally transitioned into net deposition or seaward displacement of features in the Southern Portion of the ASI.
