This report includes administrative data and historical analysis for the proposed reconstruction of Slave Cabin at Booker T. Washington National Monument, which will replace the replica which stood at the site at that time. The justification for this reconstruction was the historic inaccuracy and deterioration of that structure. The replica that was planned for removal had been built in 1948. The report describes the proposed use of the reconstructed cabin, including interpretive content. The historical analysis describes what is known about the development of the original cabin. Some participants at a Master Plan Conference held in the park in August of 1958 suggested that all plantation buildings should be reconstructed. At that time, there was agreement that the reconstruction of the cabin was necessary due to the absence of historical remains and the importance of the cabin to the birthplace story. Photographs, maps, and drawings describe the site. It is followed by the "Archeological Report on the Boyhood Cabin Site, Booker T. Washington National Monument," describing archeological investigations made at the site of the former cabin to determine, if possible, the location and size of the cabin which once occupied the site. The cabin site is not the site of the birthplace cabin, but is presumed to be the site at which Booker T. Washington lived during part of his childhood.
