The Utility of Stem Characters in the Classification of Vaccinium L. (Ericaceae)

Odell EA and Vander Kloet SP. 1991. The Utility of Stem Characters in the Classification of Vaccinium L. (Ericaceae). Taxon. 40(2):273-283

ABSTRACT: The efficacy of 28 stem features at re-creating the classification of 13 established sections of Vaccinium was tested using taximetric analysis and was found to be wanting. However, adding three reproductive features to the matrix was sufficient to recover all of these sec- tions. Stem characters will, therefore, recover specific groups previously circumscribed by a suite of both reproductive and vegetative features.
