This report details the field work completed by the Southwest Alaska Network (SWAN) freshwater monitoring program for the 2016 field season (April 21 – October 19, 2016). Recommendations to improve field methods, as well as descriptions of data processing, are also included in this document. All sampling efforts were guided by the SWAN freshwater monitoring protocol (Shearer et al. 2015a and 2015b). In 2016, the SWAN freshwater monitoring program completed 83 vertical lake profiles, operated six vertical temperature arrays, maintained two continuous water quality monitoring stations, measured stage and discharge at four lake outlets, and maintained interstitial and surface water temperature monitoring at 10 sites. Additionally, fish, water, and sediment samples were collected throughout summer months for a collaborative study examining potential sources of mercury in lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush).
