ABSTRACT: The purpose of this paper is to present two psychological measurement scales that were developed and field tested for the purposes of: 1) identifying and understanding the cognitive dimensions of wilderness solitude/privacy and 2) exploring the functions that solitude/privacy serve in wilderness environments. Both the scale items and field test results will be summarized and interpreted in hope that other wilderness researchers around the world might make future use of the scales.
