This Historic Structures Report describes the structural history of Castle Clinton at Castle Clinton National Monument, a one-tiered open casemated fort of brownstone, built on a man-made "island" of stone off the west bastion of the New York Battery. It was connected to the Battery by a timber causeway with a drawbridge. The report describes the foundation, walls, casemates and armament, the Gorge, magazines and privies, sally-port, cellars, and parade. It also provides the construction history. Castle Clinton had been planned during the summer of 1807 and built between 1808 and 1811.
