Status of the Presidio Native Flora

A database was developed in 2000 by the Presidio Native Plant Nursery to compile all floristic data available for the Presidio. Today the Presidio Vascular Plant Occurrence Database (VPOD) contains more than 13,000 occurrence records identifying 1121 different plant taxa (including varieties, subspecies, mis-identifications, etc.). Records range from current visual observations to historic observations published in local flora lists, dating back to 1790. In 2002, many new plant observations were added to the database as most of the Presidio’s Native Plant Community Zone (and many other areas) were surveyed by natural resources staff. The 2002 efforts turned up new species for the Presidio (including Triphysaria floribunda) and resulted in the creation of the first verison of the Status of the Flora Report (Fontaine 2003). This report updates the 2003 report. Since that first report 4427 records have been added to the VPOD and additional species have been found. This report is a snapshot in time of the status of the flora. The most current data are contained in the VPOD. The data for this report were excerpted from the VPOD 7/23/10. The original 2003 Status of the Flora document was compiled by Marie Fontaine with help from other Presidio Nursery staff Michael Chasse and Emily Magnaghi and direction from the Plant Conservation Committee. Without the VPOD none of this work would have been possible; the VPOD has maintained its vitality with the active participation of all Presidio Natural Resources Staff and interns.
