The globally rare lichen Hypogymnia schizidiata (G2S1, CNPS rank 1B.3; CNPS 2016) was found on Montara Mountain during the course of baseline lichen inventory work for the Rancho Corral de Tierra unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) in 2015. This discovery represented a range extension of approximately 280 miles from historical locations in the United State, on the Channel Islands in Ventura County, CA. For many years the Channel Island occurrences were known only from herbarium vouchers from 1994 and 1983, from Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands respectively (CNALH 2016, McCune 2006), despite extensive recent work in the Channel Islands National Park (CINP) and on the Channel Islands in general (Knudsen and Kocourková 2012). However additional work subsequent to the CINP checklist resulted in H. schizidiata being relocated at the historic Cristi Pines location on Santa Cruz Island, where it appears to be extremely rare (Knudsen 2016). As of 2016 it is considered to be extinct on Santa Rosa Island (Knudsen 2016). The only other locations for this rare species are on Cedros and Guadalupe Islands, off the coast of central Baja California.
