This limited historic structure report (as defined by Director's Order 28) records the general history and physical evolution of the Race Point Coast Guard Station House and document the structure's character-defining features to guide its planned rehabilitation. It was prepared for Cape Cod National Seashore by the Historic Architecture Program of the Northeast Region, National Park Service. Preparation of the report involved limited historical and archival research, as well as physical and photographic documentation of the structure. The physical documentation included a limited paint analysis but no other fabric analysis (e.g., mortar analysis). The research and documentation was conducted, and the report was written, by Architectural Conservator Maureen K. Phillips. Cape Cod National Seashore plans to rehabilitate the station house, which will involve making it ADA accessible, potentially moving and/or removing interior partitions, and fixing chronic roof leaks. This work necessitates the identification of character-defining features to ensure the preservation of the structure's historical integrity and to provide guidance for rehabilitation. The Race Point Coast Guard Station House is owned by Cape Cod National Seashore. The site was established as the Race Point Life Saving Station in 1872, and a station house was built in that year. In 1914 the Life Saving Service merged with the Revenue Cutter Service to create the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1931 the Coast Guard built the current station house at Race Point to the north of the 1872 station house. In 1979, the Coast Guard moved into new quarters in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and the National Park Service began using the Race Point Station under a lease agreement with the Coast Guard. In 1986 the site was officially transferred to the National Park Service and became part of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
