This report contains the findings of a detailed inspection and assessment of the structural components of the shelter structure at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. The investigation was conducted by Collins Engineers, Inc. for the National Park Service. The contract for this inspection consisted of furnishing the engineering services and equipment that would be needed to: determine the apparent condition of the structural components of the ruin shelter, evaluate the findings of the field inspection, determine what corrective actions might be needed, and evaluate maintenance procedures. Recommendations for future remedial measures are provided. The Casa Grande Ruin is part of a walled village that was built approximately 700 years ago. In 1903, a temporary structure was built to protect the ruins, consisting of a timber frame and corrugated iron roof panels. While this provided adequate protection to the ruin, it also obstructed the view. The present structure was completed in 1932, after the original had deteriorated to the point where a new one was necessary. The report concludes that that structure is in excellent condition, and it is recommended that a detailed inspection be made every twenty years. Color photographs and drawings are included.
