John Brown's Fort.

Fairbairn CJ. 1961. John Brown's Fort.

Mr. Archie Franzen, EODC resident architect at Harpers Ferry, has provided generous assistance. Messrs. Herbert H. Kissling and Arthur L. Sullivan, Park Historians of Harpers Ferry National Monument, have offered guidance, critical advice and encouragement which has been invaluable. Research by student architects of HABS and material gleaned from personal interviews of the writer with Mrs. Will Murphy and Mr. and Mrs. John Newcomer of Harpers Ferry have been incorporated into the report, with acknowledgement. Miss Mary Williamson has prepared the final copies. Pertinent photographs and maps are from Harpers Ferry National Monument Files. Appendices contain certified copies of important court documents, obtained by the writer through court house research in Jefferson County and Chicago, constituting the first legal title search of the property. Research reports of Charles W. Snell covering the Armory operation at Harpers Ferry, of Herbert H. Kissling, Park Historian (The United States Musket Factory) and of Historian Arthur L. Sullivan (Harpers Ferry, Casualty of War) have been referred to for further background information. For brevity in this report, the John Brown Raid itself is not detailed.
