This report was prepared for Congress to account for the status of the National Park Service Cultural Landscape Program's work on cultural landscapes, based on activities identified by the NPS and Congress as integral to the proper management of these resources. It outlines the evolving role of the NPS in landscape preservation between 1980 and 1994. The report highlights the activities of the National Register and Cultural Resource Management programs of the NPS Washington Office to recognize and protect cultural landscapes. The activities of the program have focused on providing a framework for stewardship, including formulation of policy, standards, and guidelines; clarifying terminology; defining methodologies for inventory, research, and documentation; development of technical information; and organization of technical assistance and training. The report also addresses how funding funding, staff resources, and partnerships may impact landscape preservation.
