This research was designed to: 1) develop a chemical soil amendment effective in protecting the badly eroding portions of prehistoric walls at Casa Grande Ruins; and 2) develop a durable overcoat mortar that can be used to coat the soil cement walls to yield a more natural appearance. This research effort was initiated in March 1977 with the construction of 28 test walls at the experimental site, at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. The walls were allowed to weather for nine nine months, and in January 1978 the treatments were completed by applying an overcoat of chemically amended mud to selected wall. Ten water-based chemical products and three other special-use chemical materials were selected for testing in this study, based on their performance in ongoing studies at other sites. This report describes the research design and observations. It includes a drawing of the study and photographs of the test walls.
