Physiological parameters provide useful metrics for assessing a scale of viability typically not considered. Here, white blood cell differentials were used as a proxy of chronic stress to assess microhabitat characteristics influencing hellbenders. Results suggest conductivity, pH, and dissolved oxygen contribute most to chronic stress in hellbenders, and that white blood cell differentials could be a useful conservation tool.
