In 2018, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore requested technical assistance from the NPS Water Resources Division to restore hydrologic connectivity between the Sand Point Wetlands and Lake Superior. The natural connection of this coastal wetland to the lake was mostly blocked in the 1930s when a road with a culvert was constructed across the site. The park is now considering modifying the road to allow free exchange of water between the lake and the wetlands. In June, 2018 we used the methods described in the “Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual” (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 1987) and the “Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Northcentral and Northeast Region, Version 2.0” (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 2012) to delineate wetlands in the vicinity of Sand Point Road where it crosses the wetlands. This report, which includes detailed documentation for the wetland delineation, is suitable for submission to the State of Michigan and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of permit applications that would be needed to perform a road rehabilitation at this site.
