This is a resource brief about Northern spotted owls, the 2015 species of the year for the San Francisco Bay Area Network. The Northern spotted owl is a key predator within a redwood forest that were listed as federally threatened in 1990 due to habitat loss and competition with invasive barred owls. They reside in old-growth forests and often nest in tree holes. The National Park Service now monitors spotted owl nesting and breeding rates.
