Viruses of Plants in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

ABSTRACT: The majority of known plant viruses have been described from cultivated plants and/or agronomic weeds. Despite the fact that natural, non-agronomic ecosystems represent an excellent and unexplored substrate for study on virus ecology, taxonomy and evolution they remain understudied. For this reason, in 2006/2007 we initiated a study on phytoviruses in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) within the framework of on-going All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) activities. In a few years, we successfully identified a number of phytoviruses, most of which represent as yet undescribed species. Among them, several viruses belong to genera currently represented by just one or few members (i.e. gen. Petuvirus, gen. Enamovirus, gen. Oryzavirus), or were detected also in some cultivated crops (i.e. blackberries, grapevines) indicating their possible economic importance.
