This purposes of this report are: 1. To examine the coastal processes which have resulted in the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse's being jeopardized, 2. To study the alternative actions available to the National Park Service with respect to preservation or loss of the lighthouse, and 3. To predict the likely effects of those actions. The report describes the socioeconomic, cultural, natural, and physical aspects of the environment and their impact on the structure's preservation. The recreation industry and government were two influential economic factors impacting use and development of the surrounding area. From a historical perspective, the setting of the lighthouse at the time of study didn't reflect the character that had prevailed when the structure was built. The wide beach had narrowed with erosion, and the sense of isolation no longer existed. The study identifies the on- and off-shore natural environment, determining the major factors affecting the Hatteras Island shoreline: deficits in sediment supply, high frequency impact of storms, and eustatic sea-level changes. It describes past stabilization efforts and structural alternatives, along with maps and charts.
