We investigated the origin and genetic diversity of Fragaria cascadensis, an endemic species of the Oregon Cascades. We resolved four independent origins of this geographically and ecologically restricted species. The origin of F. cascadensis is inferred to have occurred in Pleistocene Beringia (0.43-1.62 million years ago). Higher levels of plastid genome diversity are found in the southern part of the species’ range, suggestive of a glacial refugium.
