The oak population of Independence National Historical Park was surveyed during the summer of 1982 and 33.6% of the trees were found to be infested with obscure scale (Melanaspis obscura). Analysis of variance of 11 tree and site related factors showed no clear correlations with scale incidence. Rather, scale incidence seems to be clustered in several localized areas. Through weekly observations, peak crawler activity in 1983 was found to occur in late July. Horticultural oil applied at that time had little or no effect on scale viability on 1983 wood.
