This Historic Structure Assessment Report for the Blacksmith's Shop at Magnolia Plantation is part of the Inventory and Condition Assessment Program (ICAP) carried out at the park level to assist the maintenance manager in planning, organizing, and directing maintenance operations. Based on comprehensive field inspection and evaluation, this assessment includes photos, drawings, and information about the structure as provided for ICAP. It also includes the National Register nomination, feasibility study, and cost estimates. The Blacksmith shop is a traditional four-square barn building of hand-hewn posts, beams, wood lathes, and bousillage material. This type of construction, usually found in a plantation house itself, is uncommon in a surviving building, and it stands as a rare and significant dependency structure. The Blacksmith shop is also the only remaining post-on-sill building left intact in Louisiana. According to the Building Materials Assessment Analysis report, it played an important role in the construction of other buildings on the plantation by providing building materials.
