The purpose of this Historic Structure Preservation Guide is to provide maintenance personnel with an information base for budgeting and performing cyclic and routine maintenance of historic structures at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. It presents a maintenance management system to protect and preserve cultural resources, guide the programming of funds, establish a system of accountability, and other objectives as outlined in the introduction. The HSPG was developed under the direction of the Southeast Regional Office, Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, and the Denver Service Center by Marianai and Associates. It was designed and formatted to assist park maintenance staff in appropriate maintenance of the structures. It is presented in a sequence that aims to reinforce the idea that preservation maintenance is most effective when it can be visualized as part of a logical, planned process. Volume 1 (Instructions) describes the overview and entire process, with both organizational instruction and the specific technical instruction for implementing maintenance. Volume 2 (Schedules) contains the active working components of the guide and acts as a reference book for planning, organizing, and reflecting. The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site was created to preserve the aspects of the farm "Connemara" directly associated with his life at the site. Sandburg spent the last 22 years of his life at the family farm, and a number of the structures are important to understanding this period of his life.
