The Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve Foundation Statement recognizes natural soundscapes as a fundamental resource (NPS 2009). In order to document baseline conditions of this resource NPS staff deployed acoustic monitoring systems to seven locations in Gates of the Arctic (GAAR) during 2013 and 2014 (Table i). The locations were specifically chosen to study the Kobuk Preserve and Walker Lake areas in advance of a right-of-way permit by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA). This inventory was only one component of a larger research effort by GAAR to estimate impacts to cultural and natural resources posed by the construction and operation of the Ambler Road. Data collected include one-second spectral sound pressure levels and continuous MP3 audio recordings. The data join a small, but growing set that document Alaskan arctic environments (USACE 2012, Betchkal 2015, Stinchcomb and Betchkal in review).
