Alpine Lakes are fragile ecosystems of immense beauty and value. They occur in high elevations and are often subjected to wide variations in annual precipitation rates. As such, their electrochemistries are affected by these annual variations in precipitation rates, which in turn, affects the entire ecosystem. Lowcost sensors for monitoring these changes would help improve the management of these ecosystems. Lowcost Printed Circuit Board (PCB) sensors are being applied to many useful environmental and agricultural applications, including measuring soil moisture content [1], detecting pollution [2], monitoring drought conditions [3], and monitoring for saltwater contamination [4]. A five-year study has been approved by Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) to investigate if this low-cost sensor technology can be applied to environmental monitoring applications in alpine lakes. If successful, this could lead to enhanced ecosystem monitoring inside the park to assist in better protecting these valuable natural resources.
