Promoting Safe Distance Wildlife Viewing & Photography Campaign Research: Topline Report

Abrams K, Melena S, Melena K, Young H. 2017. Promoting Safe Distance Wildlife Viewing & Photography Campaign Research: Topline Report. Colorado State University

The campaign implemented September 14-17 successfully increased the proportion of visitors maintaining a safe distance (25 yards) from elk and deer. However, in our assessment, the proportion of visitors getting too close to elk was not large to being with. The volunteers do a great job of staying on top of potential interactions. When volunteers/staff are not around, the park’s wide open spaces allow visitors to easily view from a distance and for elk to keep their distance. Going forward, the park should continue using the campaign signage and rack cards, and use digital media and interpersonal communication to provide messaging to new visitors and reminders. Additionally, outreach and collaboration with other organizations/businesses that communicate with visitors will help this behavior change stick.
