Parasites and pathogens have been identified as key factors in the recent declines of amphibian populations (Daszak, Cunningham, and Hyatt, 2003). While more virulent amphibian parasites such as the chytrid fungus, may directly reduce host survival through parasite-induced mortality (Collins and Storfer, 2003), other parasites may cause similar reductions in host fitness through parasite-induced physical modifications such as missing or additional limbs (Johnson et al., 2003).
