From introduction: "In carrying out research on the history of Clay County it quickly became obvious that there was a serious lack of information regarding the built environment. The available histories of the county and the University of South Dakota discussed people, politics, social and cultural events and made passing mention of the buildings that people lived in and used. There was little mention made of the individuals who designed and built the buildings. The only architects mentioned in more than a passing fashion were Wallace LeRoy Dow and Joseph Schwartz and both of them finished their careers prior to World War I. The Clay County Historic Preservation Commission has received inquiries regarding various buildings and this short publication is a beginning attempt to compile information regarding the architects and contractors responsible for our built environment. It should be noted that the descriptor, architect, is used as it was used historically and prior to World War it was often used by individuals or newspapers in a much more liberal fashion than at present. This catalog is divided into two parts, one listing architects and one listing contractors. Both are arranged alphabetically. There are individuals who are listed in both sections."
