Hola Cultura: Fall 2016 Special Issue
2016. (Fall 2016). Hola Cultura: Fall 2016 Special Issue. September 7
Annual newsletter special issue published by Hola Cultura, a nonprofit organization that celebrates Washington, DC's Latino community and culture. The Fall 2016 special issue featured articles from the DC Latino History Project and was published on Hola Cultura Más, the website of Hola Cultura, which "covers cultural news and explores what it means to be a Hispanic resident of our nation’s capital." From the Hola Cultura website: "Hola Cultura’s DC Latino History Project -- On Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 6:30 p.m., at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library, Hola Cultura’s staff and interns will talk about our latest research into the history and presence of Latinos in the greater Washington area. Last summer, we examined where Latinos have settled locally over the last few decades. This summer we looked at where Latinos have been moving since 2010. We also mapped the different Latin American communities in Washington and the Maryland and Virginia suburbs. See where the Salvadorans, Mexicans and Guatemalans live in greatest numbers and learn which Latin American diaspora communities have little presence in the District but large ones in the suburbs." Special issue includes the following articles: Community | La comunidad: "Historias Orales | Oral Histories" "Mapping my story" "What we did with our summer" Visualizing Change: "DMV Latino neighborhoods by nationality" "Brightwood: Mapping a neighborhood’s changes" "How much do 'cultural spaces' matter? Where Latinos live in D.C., and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties" Project funding was provided in part by a Historic Preservation Fund grant to the The Humanities Council of Washington, DC for the DC Community Heritage Project (project number DC-15-014), administered by the District of Columbia State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P15AF00068) and the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
