Introduction: Studies of the bryophyte flora of Virginia in the past by this writer and others naturally have dealt with restricted areas of the state. The prevalence of rarity of many species collected but once or a few times was unknown, and their distribution largely surmised, as many still are. During a leave of absence for the second semester of the 1953-54 session at Hollins College, I made an attempt to go over much of the state and determine, in so far as possible, the distribution of taxa thought to be uncommon as well as to try to find some of those suspected to occur but unreported in Virginia....
