This report represents the findings of a visual examination of the foundations of seven aqueduct structures on the Canal and a detailed description of emergency repair measures effected at Pier No. 4 and Abutment No. 2 of the Monocacy River Aqueduct. The Condition Survey of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Aqueducts (Contract No. CX-300-4-1016) was initiated by the National Park Service in order to determine the degree of deterioration of the foundations of these aqueducts as a part of the long range plan for restoration of the canal and its structures. The terms of this contract provided for thirty days of field investigation work, during which it was anticipated that five aqueduct foundations would be investigated. In addition to these five aqueducts, job progress allowed the investigation of two additional aqueducts. The report presents the findings of these investigations and provides recommendations to treat and stabilize the aqueduct foundations. It includes diagrams and a transcript of the inspection tape recordings.
