This report was prepared with the planned rehabilitation of Lock House #6, located approximately five miles northwest of Georgetown on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It was one of the few remaining typical lock houses along the canal and was selected for rehabilitation as part of the Mission 66 program. The Lock House is located close to the George Washington Memorial Parkway, making it easily accessible and visible from the road. It was intended that the lock house would be occupied by a family, preferably an employee of the National Park Service, for its maintenance and protection. As part of the development of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, it was planned that several of the lock houses would be rehabilitated, including Lock House #6. The house at Lock #6 is an 18' x 30' stone lock house with a later addition, center brick chimney, and two fireplaces. The report contacts historical data about the construction and use of the lock house, including information about lock keepers, and architectural data. Appendices include 1828 specifications of a typical lock keeper's house, expense estimates, and maps and photographs.
