The federally endangered Anastasia Island beach mouse (AIBM) is restricted to Anastasia Island where core populations are resident in Ft. Matanzas National Monument (FMNM) and Anastasia State Park (ASP). The AIBM is vulnerable to extinction in the foreseeable future from loss and fragmentation of the dune habitats they occupy. In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew moved north along the Atlantic coast of Florida causing substantial degradation and destruction to the dune habitats occupied by AIBM.
